trauma therapy FAQs-

Trauma is often misunderstood in our culture. Here, we'll explain a few common questions people have about trauma therapy.

  • Trauma is caused by an event that creates physical, mental, spiritual, or psychological harm. When you experience trauma, you feel threatened, powerless, and frightened.

Essentially, we go into a fight, flight, or freeze response. That might seem archaic, but in everyday life, a trauma response can look like any of the following:

    • Mood swings

    • Depression

    • Panic attacks

    • Anxiety

    • Social withdrawal

    • Forgetfulness

    • Feelings of shame and guilt

    • Insomnia or night terrors

    • Anger and irritability

    • Hyper-alertness

    • Quick heart rate

    • High blood pressure

    • Feeling numb or disconnected

    • Difficulty concentrating

All these are common. But, trauma can look different for different people.

  • The best form of trauma therapy depends on the person. But, some forms of therapy are better suited for trauma.

Trauma is our involuntary response to something that reminds us of a traumatic event. That's why it's best to receive trauma therapy that addresses the neurological side of trauma.

For example, EMDR therapy, or "eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing," involves recalling traumatic memories while activating both hemispheres of your brain. This can involve handheld pulsars or simply following a light back and forth with your eyes. Most therapists think the name is silly, but it's very effective.

You can learn more about our Los Angeles EMDR therapy here.

  • We can't take your painful memories away, but we can help you reprocess the traumatic event so you don't react in the same way.

The goal of trauma therapy in Los Angeles, CA is to mitigate your trauma. When you stop having the same reaction to things that remind you of a traumatic event, your trauma is getting better.

For example, you may have traumatic memories of abandonment. If so, you may go into a trauma response when a romantic interest ignores your texts. Ideally, after trauma therapy, you wouldn't respond with as much anxiety, irritability, and fatigue when someone doesn't respond to your texts.

  • The length of trauma therapy depends on the amount and complexity of your trauma.

You, your environment, and your experiences are unique. It's best to avoid putting a timeline on your healing. To get the most out of trauma therapy, we recommend trusting and committing yourself to the process.
