5 Benefits of Group Therapy
When people think about starting therapy, they may think of sitting on a couch, one-on-one, with a therapist sitting across from them (or on a screen for a Telehealth video session from the comfort of a favorite recliner). And while many people first attend individual therapy, there’s another form of therapy that can be just as effective in reaching therapeutic goals.
What Is Group Therapy?
Group therapy is therapeutic support provided in a group format, varying in size—often with 5-10 group members. At our practice, we believe small group sizes are best with 5 to 7 participants in addition to the group facilitator. These groups are facilitated by one or more clinical therapists. Groups can be offered both in-person and through Telehealth.
Different Types of Group Therapy
Support Groups are typically tailored to address a particular kind of experience or group of people. Some examples are a grief support group or a support group for individuals who have recently gone through a divorce.
Process Groups are formatted to function in a different way. Process groups specifically focus on what is happening in the present moment between and among group members. It helps participants take a closer look at interpersonal dynamics. This helps individuals receive feedback and strengthen their interpersonal relationship skills.
Experiential Groups are focused on the individuals in the group being led through exercises that cultivate tools and skill-building. For example, guided visualizations and meditations, relational exercises are done in pairs or as a group, as well as writing exercises, may be utilized to develop a deeper understanding of yourself. These tools can then be used outside of the group context in your personal life.
Psychoeducational Groups are similar to experiential groups but a bit more focused and the most structured type of group. Often these groups will follow a plan or curriculum that is focused on a specific skill or educational goal. For example, a mindfulness group or a DBT skills group.
